Why Designers Need Impressed Voltage Awareness
When designing electrical infrastructure, such as substations, cabling, or utility networks, understanding the risks of impressed voltage (IV) is critical. Impressed voltage can occur where HV transmission systems induce electrical potentials onto nearby metallic structures, creating serious safety hazards.
This specialist training ensures that design engineers, CAD technicians and utility consultants can identify, assess and mitigate impressed voltage risks at the design stage, helping meet National Grid standards and UK industry best practice.
This course is designed:
- To raise the awareness and understanding of ALL THOSE ENGAGED IN THE DESIGN OF A PROJECT – with regards to Impressed Voltages. Where and how they can occur, and what the dangers are.
- Actively work to negate ALL incidents relating to Impressed Voltages.
- To equip all designers with a working knowledge of where Impressed Voltages may present a danger.
- To review and understand the National Grid Requirements and expectations of designers as per SR/163, SR/188 and SR/234.
- High level over of National Grid Technical Specifications and how these also interrelate to the Supplier Requirements (SR’s).

Course Overview
By completing the Impressed Voltage Awareness for Designers course, you will:
- Gain EUSR certification in Impressed Voltage Awareness
- Understand how impressed voltage affects design projects
- Recognise IV hazards in HV design, substation layouts & utility schemes
- Apply safe systems of work to reduce impressed voltage risk
- Ensure compliance with National Grid electrical design standards
- Support safer construction and commissioning of HV infrastructure
Course Content
- This training will provide the information required for an individual to be able to recognise circumstances or situations where an Impressed voltage may be apparent on any Project.
- It will equip all those designing schemes the knowledge to be able to avoid the dangers presented by Impressed voltages.
- It will raise awareness of working in close proximity to High Voltage Cables, Overhead Power Lines, Substation and Power Generation equipment.
- It will raise awareness of National Grid Working Practices and Supplier Requirement SR/234 (was TP234) as well as SR/188 and SR/163.
- Exercises to review Stage by Stage Impressed Voltage Management Drawings and look at what Construction need and work closer as one project team.
Assessment
At the end of the course, delegates will complete a variety of activities, oral, multiple choice, and written questions to confirm their understanding of impressed voltage awareness principles.
Certificates
Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the EUSR Impressed Voltage Awareness certification, which is valid for 3 years. This nationally recognised qualification is registered on the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) and demonstrates compliance with National Grid and industry safety standards for working on or designing projects where impressed voltage risks may be present.
To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the assessment before the expiry date on your card.
